Yes or no, withdrawal from alcohol "can" kill you

I know the answer to this question, I just want to see how many other people know for a fact as well. I'll tell my story on why I know this(it's sad) after some people answer.

So, yes or no; Can someone who is addicted to alcohol die from not having...

ok I didn't mean to make it a "yes or no" question,lol feel free to type why as well, because I think there are a lot of people that have no clue it can kill you (withdrawals from crystal meth can also kill you. Heroin withdrawals though can NOT kill you)

not sure why... I know it leads to shakes, convulsions, hallucinations, but not entirely sure why death...

and heroin withdrawal can be fatal in heavily addicted users who arent in great health... (also it's one of the most addictive drugs)

Well, When I was addicted to drugs, I used something similar to Heroin. It was in the Opiate family. Of course I didn't die from withdrawals but I felt very bad.

I think that you could OD on Alcohol. I was in a treatment ctr when a woman came in with what they called D.T.'s. They said she almost died from that and I had a friend that died from OD-ing on drugs but I've never heard of anyone dying from withdrawals.

I can see how Crystal Meth withdrawals could kill you though. I used Crystal Methadrine I.V. when I was much younger and, after just 5 minutes, I thought I was going to loose my mind. I was in such a depression and that was just one time and it wasn't even very much. I had used Speed and Crank and other things. So, I could see it happening to someone who used a lot.

I'm very interested in knowing what happened.

kat - the DTs happen when you are withdrawing... it's one of the symptoms of alcohol withdrawl... it's why they keep people who are sobering up under careful watch... you could die...

Yes, but you are greatly more likely to die if you remain addicted.

My Father was a heavy alcoholic all his life.When I was born,he stopped drinking.Since his body was so dependant on the alcohol,not having it sent him to liver failure,and countless other medical problems,and he passed away when I was 5.

So yeahh,It can.

toadaly - never meant to imply otherwise, if people are that addicted, you need doctors to keep an eye on them while they sober up, but it is a lot better for the person to sober up than to remain addicted...

Sudden alcohol withdrawal can cause seizures among other things
Same with crystal meth, some barbiturate withdrawals can kill you to I believe.

Despite what you'd heard though, no matter how addicted a person, or how long, heroin withdrawals(or any opiate, for that fact) can't kill you. It can bring you incredibly close to feeling like you're going to die, but opiate withdrawal isn't fatal, like alcohol or crystal meth.
