Why do we have middle names or wicked long names?

Lay I have a friend who was like 'I think it is stupid to have middle names'

And I was thinking 'I waonder why we have them?!'

So this leads to my question(s)

Why do we have middle names or like 5 names?

Because we can

I've wondered that to.
I think we should just have a first and last name.
cuzzz whats the point in a middle name?
It's useless I think.
Unless it's just to tell people apart.
as in if they have the same first and last name.
I wonder?

Beacuse some people have loadsa names they want to name their children but don't want loadsa children they give them loadsa middle names so they have the names the mother liked hope this made sense

Because it helps reduce the number of people with the same exact name. Consider the number of John Smiths in the world. Quite a few. By adding a middle name it becomes a little less likely that John Adam Smith will meet another John Adam Smith.
