Why is john mccain trying to postpone the debate?

How far we have come... Asked by jimahl 2 months ago, 16 answers.

John McCain is suspending his campaign and wants to postpone the debate friday because of the financial situation. Does anyone really buy this? I think he is actually afraid to debate Obama, especially in light of recent events. He knows he will not...

look good against Obama, and is trying to avoid it.

I believe that this is a "grandstand" move by McCain.
He is trying to send the message that he cares more about this country than the election. And if that gives him an easy way out of the debate, he is fine with that. This debate has been planned for a long time, and though the economy is in horrible condition, it didn't happen overnight.

He's simply doing what he has professed all along -- Putting Country First!

The debate Friday was to be on Foreign Policy. You really think McCain is afraid to debate Obama on foreign policy?

I hate to tell you guys...but this financial crisis is dire...it goes far beyond a Presidential Election, and most certainly beyond a debate...

We're looking at the crash of 1929 all over again, except these days we have a "World Economy"...one big block falls, and the house of cards is gone...It ain't just us...think domino effect...

I won't go so far as to say his motives are so altruistic as he might, but I don't think being a chicken sh*t, is his reason.

If they're NOT debating...

...my money says they're figuring out how to rob me, you, and everybody else on this site & hand the money over to the crooks who got us into this mess.

To me, that's plain BS.

Well, the truth is...he does want to suspend the debate...but he also says, he's suspending his campaign, his ads, and speeches, to go back to Congress and be a Senetor to help figure out what to do in this financial crisis. The goal is to try and figure something out BEFORE Wallstreet opens on Monday...a predictable black Monday, if they don't do something.

Obama says he agrees with McCain with many of his proposals...however, he doesn't like the "timeline"...Like hey...that's like saying I don't like the train schedule, so I'll stand here on the tracks, and make them pick me up when I want to be picked up". The train is Wallstreet...and they have their own "schedule".

Well, it wasn't just us in the 1930's, either. In fact, the collapse of world trade then is largely what made the problem worse and caused economies to spiral into depression. The 1929 crash would have been another recession if not for the reaction of consumers and governments to major bank failures. It remains to be seen whether the credit system in the US will completely collapse and cause consumption to plummet, and whether the world's governments will get involved in a tariff war.

do some of you really think that john mccain rushing to washington will really make a difference to the effectiveness of any economic recovery plan? remember, right now he is just a senator, hes not the president yet. country first my foot

but one thing I agree with mccain: stop the ads. its getting disgusting

"You really think McCain is afraid to debate Obama on foreign policy?"

no, not at all. but it wouldnt hurt him to have more time to prep for it, right?

I agree with utopia. McCain's not postponing because he's afraid or because he's going to use those hours to single handedly save the economy. This was a calculated move meant to strengthen his public image while forcing Obama into a lose/lose position. They both have jets, so it's not as if participating in a short debate will keep them from their duties, and the issues being considered probably aren't going to be resolved by then anyway.

From what he's said so far, it looks as if he might have put himself in a position to have his plan backfire.

A president is going to need to deal with many issues at once. If McCain can't keep in touch with what is going on while on the campaign trail, and get back to DC when he is needed, then how is he going to deal with the demands of the presidency?

I think this is move of McCain's is meant to make him look concerned and presidential, and also to get out of a debate I don't think he is ready for. It doesn't seem to be working. So far the debate is not cancelled. The Commission on Presidential Debates has not cancelled it. In the end, I think McCain will show up. If he doesn't he will look incredibly weak.

And ethmer, yes, I do think McCain is afraid to debate Obama on foriegn policy, or any other issues. McCain has shown over and over again his lack of understanding in foreign policy. He doesn't know the difference between Sunnis and Shias. He had to have Joe LIEberman whisper in his ear when he confused them. He won't have anyone whispering in his ear at the debate... On second thought, he just might. Bush did in 2004 when he got caught with the transmitter on his back.

Jimahl,

It is VERY presidential to rush back to Washington when the country or apart of it is facing crisis. Check your history. Presidents do it all the time. That doesn't mean that they are single minded but that they know how to prioritize.

ethmer, no one said he can't run back to DC if he needs to. But why must he suspend his entire campaign, and why can't he have the debate tomorrow? Especially now that the deal seems to be made for the bail-out.

"didnt stop him from winning then"

Well, he really didn't win then. The official tally showed him winning, but it was clear the official count was wrong.

I doubt that he is afraid of debating Obama. I think he is showing to us that he really is going to put Country First.
If you havent noticed the economy has become even worse since the huricanes in Texas and the southern half of the US. I live in Georgia and we are running out of gas. In my town alone there are maybe 3 gas stations with gas, and they are coming close to their end as well.
Perhaps we should stop reading into his asking to postpone the debate as a bad thing. It's possible that he really is trying to help in our country's time of need.

lanternoflight, what could McCain possibly do to help the situation that would require him to suspend his campaign and postpone the debate? I think it is more impartant than ever to make sure we hear from both of them on how they are going to handle this. A debate at this time is not only appropriate, but necessary for the american people to make their choice.
