Did I just get a virus or was that a glitch?

Thunder Robot Asked by funadvice 11 months ago, 5 answers.

Something weird just happened to my computer that I have never seen before. I clicked on something in my email ( NOT unknown recipient or anything like that) and then tabs titled "blank" or something similar, just started openeing by themselves, one...

after another after another. Like 40 or more and still going. So I tried to close them out but nothing was responding. I didn't know what to do because they were opening and multipling so fast. I just reached over and shut it down. Has this happened to anybody or sound familiar? What the crap just happened?

Ok, I just sent you a fun mail as well.
1) we don't install anything on a computer when you use our site - so, it must have been from another site
2) are you running IE or FireFox? FF is FAR more secure than Internet Explorer.
3) Mac or Windows?

Is activex disabled on your PC, if you're not on a mac? That will protect you from a lot of viruses, if you disable ActiveX.

Last, run spybot & see if that picks up anything on your box, and it'll help remove it, etc. Spybot is also free.

#1.
when you are trying to shut down a flurry of pop-ups USE THE HOT KEY combo <ctrl>W. I guarentee you can shut those suckers down. (Hold the <control> key down and tap the <W> key.)
#2
Get "Spybot, Search and Destroy" and "Ad-Aware SE". Both are free and both are VERY good at getting rid of spyware.
#3
Make sure that you are running a firewall
#4
Keep your anti-virus definitions up to date

Hope this helps. Good Luck!!
