Plasma is cheaper, but won't last as long as an LCD tv will. If you're looking for a bargain, go with plasma. If you dont' mind kicking yourself as prices continue to fall, go with an LCD, as it'll last longer & be better over the long term, but you'll find prices continue to fall even after you've bought one.
Each has its advantages.
Plasma has better contrast, darker blacks, and more vibrant colors. It also usually has a wider viewing angle. Plasma tends to be a little cheaper than a similar quality LCD set. The drawbacks of Plasma are they draw a lot of electricity (even more than a CRT TV) and they throw off a lot of heat (which warms your room and runs your electricity cost up more because your air conditioner has to run more).
LCDs usually have higher resolution, are brighter, and usually last longer than Plasmas.
I just purchased a 42" Visio HD LCD TV at Sam's for $800. It looks great and I never saw that big an LCD HD TV that cheap. My FIL liked it enough that he got one for himself. There are several new technologies in development for flat panel TVs so expect whatever you buy today to be obsolete in a few years; that is why I didn't want to spend a lot of a TV now.

Which is better, lcd or plasma?
If I were to buy a HDTV, should I invest my money in an LCD or Plasma set? What’s the difference? Is one cheaper? Does one last longer?
