If you are interested in serious photography consider a digital SLR. Something along the lines of a Canon digital Rebel or a Nikon D40. With a budget of $400 you will only be able to get a body and perhaps a cheap lens but the advantages of a SLR camera will still be there and as you get more funds you can buy more lenses.
BJ's has got great and CHEAP cameras!
some good quality brands are Canon , Nikon and Sony , I think that the best 4 taking pictures is Canon . for recording SoNy - best ever ...
Sony or Panasonic for movies/motion photography, Canon and Nikon are reputed to be the best for still photography and I can't say I disagree. Although you won't be able to get the whizz-bang features, you will have the basics and more imprtantly, the quality you are after. SLR if you can.
Canon is always the best of all types for cameras

What would be a good camera to buy?
I need to buy a camera to start putting together a photography portfolio. I have a kodak c613 and it is a good camera in general, but it doesnt give me the quality im looking for to have my photography taken seriously. what would be a good (yet affordable, as in $400 or less) camera to get?
