First of all, I am so sorry to hear about that. I aint going to lie to you, this disease is pretty rough and you're friend's in for a rough treatment. The risk of MDS increases with age as the disease most commonly affects people between the ages of 58 to 75.
I'm going to be straight down honest with you when it comes to the facts. Clearly, your friend is not one of the common cases because I bet that your friend's youber than 58, but it not only depends on the age, it depends on how serious this thing is as well.
Risk Score Average Survival
Low 5.7 years
Intermediate 3.5 years
Intermediate 1.2 years
High 0.4 years
But you know what? no matter what the risk score might be, there IS a cure.
There are no known drugs that cure myelodysplastic syndromes. Some patients with milder forms of the disease may be able to survive for many years with "supportive care," using growth factors, transfusions and antibiotics. For some young and healthy MDS patients, a bone marrow transplant can sometimes cure the disease. Gud luck, and send my deepest regards to your friend. Glad to help
