I wouldn't reccomend Runescape or IMVU, a lot of good mmorpg's are p2p, pay 2 play and require membership.

Some of the best are:-

World of Warcraft (Over 8 million players)
LoTR online (Quite new but great graphics for an online mmorpg)
Guild Wars (I have never played but some say it is good)

12 bucks per month though. HUGE game but EXTREMLY addictive lol but hey, I met my girlfriend online lol so im lucky I guess
