To me, it signifies the identity crisis that everybody goes through when they hit a certain age, realize that education is the process of telling smaller & smaller lies, etc.

Or that culture, as we know it, is simply the process of destroying of an indigenous identity and replacing it with the ideals of a foreign invader. It's happened since time immemorial, and the only way to stop it is to realize that all things (like religion) belong to a certain time, place, and people...not to be used to bludgeon those who have their own beliefs into following foreign ones.
