'I couldn't care less' means they don't care at all and 'I could care less' means they somewhat care. However, I just think the 'I could care less' is wrong, as it doesn’t mean what the person is trying to say.

I could care less is a phrase used by people thinking they're saying I couldn't care less. In reality, I don't think I've ever encountered someone who has said the first without meaning the second.

I think of 'I could care less' meaning I could care less than you think I should/do
and ' I couldn't care less' means you care so little, you couldn't not care anymore.
LOL that sounds confusing.

Dear hooch,
I believe the phrase I couldn't care less was the original. Meaning of course the speaker is feeling the less he possibly can. The phrase I could care less is stating that the speaker indeed has some care left. The latter is used incorrectly in most cases I believe.
Sue...good luck
