There are different types of iPod's - there are mp3 ones which are just music, and mp4 ones which hold all files including video.

im not very technologicly educated but I believe that the mp4 is the music file and an ipod is the music device that you play mp4's

Ipods are a device made by Apple.
an MP4 (as you put it) is a type of music/video file.
An mp4 player, allows you to playback the mp4 file.

so basically, an Ipod is a type of mp3/mp4 music or video player.

but you can buy different brands of Mp4 players.
