I don't really know what the "best" Catholic bible is. I certainly recomment three: the New Jerusalem Bible (NJB) is the most readable and has very good notes. The Revised New American Bible (RNAB) has a wonderful New Testament section, but many parts of teh Old Testament are still poorly notated. It is also the version we use in the liturgy in the USA. And the Revised New Standard Version (Catholic Edition) is also very good, highly scholarly. Any of these are very good. In any case, be sure it is a translation, not a paraphrase (like the Good News Bible, among others), and that the notes are approved--look for the imprimatur.
