What is a mp4?

I have seen a couple of people ask about mp4 players. I know what a mp3 is. What is a mp4, and how does it differ from a mp3? Sorry if this sounds silly, but I must be out of the loop.

MP3 is for audio files. MP4 is for video files, it allows the large video files to be compressed into very small files and quality is not affected. With a MP4 player and a broad band connection you can watch video over the internet immediately and with perfect quality.
