What is a good brand of guitar?

ok I want to learn how to play the electic guitar. I've never tried before and I don't want a really cheap guitar but not a super expensive one either. what is a good brand or whatever? and all together how much will everything cost?

I dont play guitar but my dad has about six and a gibson is great if you can afford it...theres nothing wrong with a fender though. it depends what kind you get. my dad plays a fender strat he likes them.
