What happens when you get bit by a tick?

Pattie and George Asked by modernwinterbreeze 6 months ago, 9 answers.

A couple of hours ago, I felt a very small bump on my head, though I ignored it for a little while and then took a shower. When I got out, I showed by mom the bump, but for a minute, I thought it was a zit or something. Turns out it was a tick. It...

apparently dug into my skin and my mom couldn't get it out. My neighbor is a doctor so he finally got it out of my skin, but I'm still worried.

This is the first time I was bit by a tick and I have no idea what the side effects could be, if they're are any. After I got it takened out, I started to get a headache and I felt as if I was going to vomit for some reason. There is a small chance I could get lime disease my neighbor said, but anything is possible.

Though, I am just wondering if they're any side effects I could get after getting bit by a tick. Are there?

Most people do not have any side effects. The only thing to watch for is a high fever, and vomiting. However, this very rarely happens.

They're just blood-suckers... but they carry a lot of germs. Disinfect the wound, keep it clean, and have someone check it daily.

eww.. dogs get them so often and they are fine. I would saturate a cotton ball in rubbing alchohol and press it firmly to the area and just keep checking it every day. if it changes, like swells greatly or fever or vomiting occur go to your doc, but I wouldn't worry too much about it. Hopefully your doc pulled the entire head out. typically what happens when you try to pull the tick out is people often don't remove them properly and the head stays in. the head burrys itself in to the skin and the body stays on the outside. so when you pull on the body, the head stays in ...yukkky I know. usually you want to bun the end of a needle and get it red hot and place it on the ticks back end, it will come out on its own due to the heat. or use oil or dawn dish soap, those two can seal the area where the tick has burrowed in and it will come out for air.I grew up on a farm and have done this countless times on cows, sheep, dogs...you name it. Aaahhh, I am itching just thinking about it I am sure your fine.

There are different types of ticks. Deer ticks, which carry Lyme Disease, are different from the ticks that bite dogs.

If your doctor was able to get the tick out, he should tell you what kind of tick it was.

Symptoms of Lyme disease include flu-like symptoms and also a rash in a bulls-eye pattern, which can occur from a week to a month after the bite.

Sometimes they can carry things like TB(tuberculosis) or Lyme disease. Watch out for flu-like symptons (headaches, vomitting, fever-high temperature). But most of the time (if you don't live somewhere like India or Africa) they won't carry any disease and so you will be fine! But do make sure it's properly disinfected. Hope this helped x

Horrible for you, but I've had quite a few ticks over the years and never had any side effects. What they say about symptoms to watch out for is good, and also the advice that most tick bites are harmless.

One thing I will add is that in France I've bought some really good 'tick hooks' from the phramacist, which allow you to safely pull/twist the tick straight out, with its mouthparts still attached. (The danger with pulling the normal way is that you break off the mouthparts and they stay in your body, which can cause infections.) Obviously the doctor managed to get it off properly, but if you live in an area with many ticks, expecially if you have pets, it's well worth getting these tick hooks so that you can get them straight off as soon as you find them.

We used to do the dabbing them with alcohol/soap thing, but apparantly that makes them spit their nasty, germy juices into you as they die, so the hook/twist is much safer.

How big was the tick? The tiny kind is the first larval stage, so they have never bitten another animal, and could never be carrying any germs. I always find that quite reassuring.
