It is an old English word dealing with physical beauty. It comes from a Latin word that also refers to physical beauty in a person. I, too, had never heard the word before so I suspect it is one of those old words that has fallen out of use. I did find the definition quickly by going to Google, entering it in the search bar and immediately came up with links to the word in 3 dictionaries as well as links to numerous other references.
