I think that what people would see as "emo" these days are as follows:
(this is emo style for todays people)
Purple black and red are the main "emo" colors.
they usually are striped or checkered.
Hair is also a huge part of this style, usually mid lenght, straight, with bangs that cover the eyes. usually two toned. The back is sometimes spiked out.
baggy pants, torn pants, or tight tight pants.
torn shoes, converse, or black boots.
But to me, emo is what it means.
emo is short for emotional. I would consider someone emo when they seem to be more emotional, usually in negative ways which is why people assosiate it with cutting.
MUSIC is also a huge part of the "emo stereotype. music thats a little more vulgur, but meaningful.
I think its just another catagory, along with punk, goth, prep ect.
but it has nothing to do with cutting yourself
(this is were many stupid people come in and start using the word as an insualt)
self mutilation has a catagory of its own.
emo (along with all the other stereotypes) is a style of music, and a way of dressing. there is no exact way of dressing though. as many different styles forom other catagorys can also be placed under the name of emo. most sterotypes are "borrowing" things from other stereotypes...mainy in the dressing sense.
but basically emo is a genre of music and a style of dressing.
to me and friend an emo is not a specific fashion. an emo is somebody who expresses by how they dress and what they wear. an emo could cut but are usually just emotionally distressed. it is not like being gothic of it is not a fashion trend it is a feeling and a unique sense of expressing themselves aswell as life.

What do you think emo is?
My perception on being "emo" is not the way you wear your hair. Its the creativeness and originality of the hairstyle. Its not the clothes you wear but again the creativeness of it. You dont try to be emo but you just are. The way you express yourself....
The music that you listen to the way you express yourself not only through words but your stlye.. What do you tthink
