What are some good low budget ways to go green?

I am wondering what are some good ways to go green without spending a lot of money. Like how I can recycle certain things and ways to make my car use less gas.

GLASS YOU CAN RECYCLE
Food and beverage containers; clear, green and brown bottles and jars up to 1 gallon in size.
GLASS YOU CANT RECYCLE
All other glass including window glass, light bulbs, mirrors, Pyrex, ceramic, porcelain, drinking glasses.
HOW TO RECYCLE IT
Remove and discard lids and caps; labels OK; rinse and place in bin.

METAL YOU CAN
Aluminum and tin food and beverage cans, up to 1 gallon in size; aluminum foil and pie plates. Aluminum and steel aerosol cans containing non-hazardous materials and 3 gallon #10 cans such as coffee containers
METAL YOU CANT
All other metal containers including aerosol containing hazardous materials or paint cans, cleaning fluid and poison containers, scrap metal.
HOW TO
Rinse empty containers and place in bin; can lids OK in can; labels OK.

PLASTICS YOU CAN
Small and wide mouth containers marked on the bottom with a (PETE OR PET); or a (HDPE) up to one gallon in size.
PLASTICS YOU CANT
Containers with other numbers or no numbers; containers larger than three gallons; plastic bags, motor oil and anti-freeze containers; even if marked with a '1' or '2'.
HOW TO
Make sure container has a '1'or '2' on the bottom; remove and discard cap or lid; labels OK; rinse and place in bin.

NEWSPAPER, CATALOGS, MAGAZINES, JUNK MAIL & SHREDDED PAPER YOU CAN
Clean, dry newspaper, (and inserts), magazines and catalogs, junk mail, computer paper, stationery, bills, shredded paper, envelopes with windows. NOTE: Must be less than 2 months old, or goes out in trash.
AND ONES YOU CANT
All other paper including soiled paper, telephone books, non-paper bags such as plastic or TYVEK, overnight delivery envelopes, bubble wrap, books of any kind, greeting cards, gift wrap and product samples.
HOW TO
Place in brown paper grocery bags or cardboard box or tie with string and place in bin on top of other material. No plastic bags.

CORRUGATED CARDBOARD YOU CAN
Clean cardboard with a wavy middle layer of brown paper.
YOU CANT
Pizza boxes, wax coated cardboard.
HOW TO
Flatten boxes, remove packing material, tie in bundles with string; place in or beside bin. 3' x 3' maximum size.

BOXBOARD YOU CAN
Cereal, cracker, shoe boxes and shirt boxes, beverage cartons and six-pack cartons
AND CANT
Boxboard with wax, plastic or foiled coating and boxboard that has been contaminated by food.
HOW TO
Flatten boxes, remove plastic cereal bag, place in paper bag or tie in bundles with string; place in or beside bin.

MILK CARTONS & JUICE BOXES YOU CAN
Residential aseptic packages including the gable shaped paper containers (milk-type containers) up to one gallon in size, and the small, single serving juice boxes
AND CANT
Any aseptic package over one gallon size.
HOW TO
The cartons and juice boxes must be empty, with straws and caps removed, and the larger gable shaped cartons must be rinsed clean.

I would add that it is simple and inexpensive to walk or ride a bike. plan where you need to go before you leave the house. close errands, walk.
have a reusable bag with you when you go to the store for your purchases.
place a fliter on your water tap and refill your water bottle from the tap instead of purchasing bottled water.
not only are these things easy to do, they will help you to go green and save you money.

If you want your gas to last a little longer, there are a few simple things you can do.

Keep up with the maintenance (oil changes and whatnot)
Make sure your tires are inflated properly
Fill up with the sun isn't out
Never fill up with the big gas truck is restocking the station
Remove anything you don't need in the car (especially the trunk)
Keep your air conditioning setting to pull air from inside the car or roll down the windows

The answers above are great. In fact, being green is often cheaper, because it involves using less 'stuff'. The green moto is 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle'. First, reduce the amount of stuff you use. Then reuse as much as you can. This could mean buying second-hand things, so that you're re-using something that is no longer needed, instead of supporting the creation of something new. I get a lot of clothes, kitchen items etc second hand. You need to know good places to get them, because you don't want rubbish, but it can be fun and you are being green and saving money at the same time.

If you buy fresh, local fruit and vegetables in season you will also save money, and you are being very green because they haven't been transported half way round the world to bring you strawberries in winter or whatever. They taste a lot better when they're local and seasonal too. Maybe you could even grow some of your own..?
