Assuming that the popcorn doesn't have layers of paint, get the surface saturated with water and use a taping knife to remove the popcorn by scraping it off in large sections. The stuff will move pretty well after you get it wet. Just remember to cover everything in plastic first that is in range of the fallout.
You should be able to repair any divots with spackle or larger divots with Topping Compound.



Ways to fix popcorn ceiling at home.
I have a ceiling that I want to get the acoustic popcorn texture off of too. I read the other post about removing it but I want to know if there is a way for me to do this by myself. Can a DIY'er tackle this without destroying the house?
