User acounts - emails

ok you know when you first turn on a computer and it comes up with all the users and you click your one and go on your acount, underneath mine it says 8 unread emails but I have no emails to read and I cant seem to get rid of it can someone help me get rid of...

This happened to me before. Somewhere there should be a "read" option, as there is in Yahoo. A list of more options scroll down. One of them allows you to read unread mail.
Somehow, spam ends up getting sent to me and it's dated days prior to the current date. I don't understand it, and it's quite annoying.
