No. I used to like the series, but now I don't. And I'll tell you why.
Bella is a horrible, weak excuse for a female character who lets herself be controlled by Edward, and thinks of nothing but him and becoming a vampire. All she does is whine about how much she just wants to live forever and be pretty and invulnerable. Miraculously, although she is supposed to be "plain", 4 other boys in the school love her besides Edward, and though everyone is nice to her she constantly whines about it. And her only flaw is that she's "clumsy" which is mentioned about 30 times in the first book alone, and is not a real flaw because people just think it makes her charming anyway. Even when she becomes a super hot, perfect, strong vampire, she has no problems hunting or using any of her powers. Edward says she acts like she's "been a vampire for decades, not days". Surprise, surprise. She gets to have her cake and eat it too. After little to no loss at all on her part for the entire duration of the series.
Edward can't decide on a personality. He's sweet, then he's angry, then he's emo, then he's possessive, then he's charming, then he's quiet. But mostly, he's a creepy stalker who doesn't care about Bella's opinions and makes decisions for her-- not even factoring in how she feels about things. I mean, come on! Ripping out part of her ENGINE so she can't drive to see Jacob?! And under the pretense that it's for her protection?! Yah, if it was for her protection he would keep her away from his family as well, but he's just in denial about being an emotionally abusive jerk who controls Bella like all she exists for is to do whatever he tells her to. What a prat.
Jacob, one of the only passable characters in this "saga," is pushed aside for this "perfect," Adonis-like statue of a man called Edward.
The vampires in this seriously really have no flaws-- I mean, come on. They SPARKLE. The end of the series is extremely anti-climactic, and not to mention the book is severely anti-feminist. The main females in the book are all weak.
Bella relies heavily on Edward and exists only to get herself into trouble so some stronger man gets to save her dumb a**. Rosalie's existance is based on her beauty. Alice really only obsessed about material posessions, parties, slumber parties, etc. Esme is basically the motherly figure who does nothing while the men of the family get all the praise and action. If that's not anti-feminist I don't know what is.
But then, to top it off, the 4th book is crap and completely out of touch with any sort of vampire lore, ever. I mean, has Stephenie Meyer even done her homework? Doubtful. Apparently anyone can get a degree in English these days.
The worst part of the series is, that teenage girls read these books and think it's good literature-- they think it's OK to be like Bella, whiny, selfish, and taking anything that her "true love" throws at her. And to top it off, they fall in love with Edward through Bella's eyes and think it's alright to strive to find a man who is as "perfect" as Edward, when such perfection is virtually unattainable and ultimately unattractive. I understand the wish fulfillment and the need for adventure and romance. I get it. But there are way better books to spend your money on. Leave the wish fulfillment for the author, because that's obviously all these novels are to her.
I don't wish to argue with anyone. I realize we all have our opinions, but a question was asked, and I answered honestly and thoroughly. I first read the series when I was 13-14. Since then I've grown up a lot and realized that although the books are entertaining on the surface, ultimately they are damaging. I wanted to be like Bella, I wanted to find an Edward. And after rereading the series, I realized how wrong I was. Edwards are ugly, Bellas are undeserving. I don't wish that on myself or anyone. I just hope one day more people will see that.
YOU GUYS SUCK!!! And I don't just mean suck, I mean REALLY suck!!! I mean, how can you possibly say something like that?? Just admit it, you're jealous of Bella because she has Edward. Well, let me tell you something. You are all just bumholes. I hate you all who think that Twilight sucks. How can you say that about Edward??? Come on, people! Edward rocks! And he always looks out for Bella, and makes sure she's happy. You guys SUCK! That's all I can say, really. OK? End of story.
