I am a singer, musician, writer and actor.

That mucous thing can sneak up and grab me anytime so I always carry a small bottle of water with me - I will even sneak one on stage if I am in the theatre.

But especially with singing you should avoid dairy products a day before giving your performance and certainly avoid them on the day itself.

Most singers mucous will vary according to the time of day and most that I know will drink water before and during performances - not during the songs but between the songs.

There are some bad things you can do to ruin your voice and increase mucous... like yelling at a soccer match. Also if you tend to choke while eating or drinking the coughing afterwards can damage your voice box for a number of days.

So in short... diet, water and a quiet life is the answer.
