I am not sure exactly how they do it on this site. However, I mod another site, and it is actually my job to change titles! When people make a title like "Help" or "Any Advice?" I go in and change it to something more specific like "Could I be pregnant?" or "Should I stay with him?" So they might do similar things here.
That has happened to me too, and I am an advisor. I do not like it at all. I am a writer, and I definitely know how to title any questions on here, so I'm not really sure who does it. It is very frustrating.
I have seen I don't know how many questions on here that are not worded right from March 17, 2005 that are left alone, yet questions from REAL people are messed with. Maybe someone will come along and address it.
Yup, I'll address it, since it's my job. I work on the site, and I am paid to change the titles of questions. llewellyn hit the nail on the head.
For instance, titles such as "HELP ME" "WEIRD DREAM" and "WHAT'S WRONG?" don't really tell anyone anything. When they are complete questions after I have changed them, people viewing the site have a better idea of what is being asked, and therefore can address the questions better. It's been shown on the site (and this is addressed on the page when you ask a question) that questions that have full, descriptive questions as titles get answers faster. So really, I do it to help you.
texaskimmie: The questions from March 17, 2005 were old questions that were restored following a server crash we experienced a few months ago. The programmer (I can't give any detail since I'm not the programmer) somehow put these questions back onto the site after recovering them, that is why they are here. I don't edit them simply because they are old, and I was not hired at that point. However, sometimes if one of these questions get answers or attention, I will edit the title for clarity.
Feel free to FunMail me with anymore questions. Texaskimmie, if you provide me with specific examples of titles you are unhappy with, I will be happy to discuss it with you.
Regards,
Dara (aka editor)
