Tired of the teenage stereotypes

Asked by nirvanafan 3 months ago, 14 answers.

I am sick and tired of the worlds view of the American teenager. They think we are spoiled, iPods always in our ears and cell phones in hand, repetitive use of words like "like" and they think we are lazy and stupid. They think we do not care about...

anything but ourselves and our friends, that we are loud, obnoxious, and disrespect our parents. I am tired of people saying teenagers leech of their parents money with no thanks. They think there is something wrong with a teenager-God forbid!-still living at home! Thats just not done! they think we don't want to work and just want to take our parents money and but Hollister and Abercrombie. I am so sick of this. I hardly know ANYONE like this! Very, very few people that I know act like this, and it is certainly not me! Who else is tired of being judged and pidgeonholed?

Hum...SORRY guys! Stereotype or not...its sad but true...a majority of teenagers are exactly like that...immature, lazy, don't know how to appreciate things, think they are Gods greatest gift - they fallow societys' norms to a dot. A lot of them see the world with their eyes closed...a paradox in itself!!! No one will admit to this, but look at kids in your class, the ones that backtalk the teacher the ones that think they are absolutely correct and know everything about life...the ones that do drugs and drink and have sex when they are 13 (still a child much to everyones surprise) and they believe they are adults. Of course the only reason they do this is because they are like sheep...fallowing one another! They mold to their surrounding and fall under peer pressure. I swear if someone popular woke up one day and decided to wear their pants on backwards...thousands will fallow...why?, because they don't think for themselves. Many need to open their eyes and realize what life is truly about. I KNOW, I KNOW, it sounds harsh but its true...not all of us are like that but a majority definitely spoil it for the rest.

Holy crap, well I see your pretty passionate bout this topic lol
Well it happens in australia too but half of the time its the people that dont have much to give their kids all that that are saying these things.
And at such a young age how else are we to get the things we want OR need sometimes its hard to find a job for some people so they need to ask their parents.
It's just another pissed off oldie hating on the why generation I think we should just ignore them and get on with life. Maybe they didnt have the things we have today.

Yes, I am passionate about it. And I can't get a job yes, no one will hire me because I'm too young. As soon as I can I will though. And actually they didn't have the technology we have today. But who says all young people are in love with that? Personally I hate it when I see people walking around everywhere with one ear free and the other with an earphone.

I'm 20, no cell phone, no iPod, I'm in the process of moving out of my parent's house. I detest Hollister, Ambercrombie, American Eagle, and Pac Sun. I have 2 jobs so I don't want to hear that teenagers are lazy and unappreciative. It's the elderly who don't really appreciate us in my opinion. So stereotypical. I'm moving in with my boyfriend here in a little bit and my grandma is so mad at me thinks we do "it" and we don't.

I think the 'stereotype' thing is not necassarily fair, but when you get older you will percieve people your age EXACTLY the same!! becuase when you move out of an age phase, it's only then you see the flaws in it..

and sterotypes arn't always true...I am TOTALLY NOT a traditional 31 year old lol!

It's not just in the you S of A. In NZ, I see this a lot too.

Everybody thinks we are disrespectful. I think it's a learning curve. How quick you mature. Once you do something "stupid and disrespectful" you can improve on it and see the other side. You begin to see that once you do something stupid and immature, there ARE consequences and you have more respect for things like your parents, the law etc.

I see many people in their high school years that try to follow image and get latest technology and such. I think it's stupid. I have no ipod, a cell phone that I have had since 15 (18 now).

minx888 it may be the majority, but in this case, majority does not rule. (by the way, I do see the flaws in my generation and in myself. I am calling nobody perfect here) When talking about respect I mostly meant parents because teachers can be some of the worst people. I dont mind if someone questions a teacher but when you treat your parents like crap, thats what I was talking about. Anyway, I could go on and on, but I'll shut up for now.

hum...majory as in most people not everyone! I don't mean to sound abrasive I was just stating my opinion. I know what you were talking about...however I was referring to teachers to prove a point ( SOME...kids fool around in class, talk, insult and are all around rude)...I know some teachers are just nefarious and vile...but some are too nice and teens take advantage of it. Now, again, not always, but it does happen and thats why people add the stereotypes (just an example as to where it derives from)...because they see it in a couple of kids and wha-la...a stereotype!!!

It's all very ubiquitous...thanks to the media, the movies and commercials!!! For example in some movies teens are illustrated as being hostile to any authority (parental or otherwise). Now, TV anchors, parents, liberal intellectuals, senior citizens, right-wing attack panelists, teachers, and anonymous callers all perpetrate the notion that the American teen is valueless, apathetic, lazy, rude and culturally impaired, and many other things...:-/

Of course all stereotypes have some truth to them...in my opinion!!! Not all teens are exactly like that just that in a few cases some are ... and just because of that people will continue to condemn the teen with the worst possible attributes...only because in some cases it is true.
