1. Please don't get such a small dog if you have kids in the house. Their bones will break very, very easily.
2. Chihuahua's are NOT hypoallergenic. You can easily find a list of hypoallergenic dogs online.
3. Please adopt from an animal shelter. Up to 40% of dogs at animal sheters are purebreds, and they are killed if not adopted. They will come with shots, vetted, healthy and spayed/neutered. Pet stores often get their dogs from puppy mills, which mean they will have higher likelihood of health problems, degenerative and genetic diseases and deformities. They are also not vetted, have no shots or protection against lethal doggie diseases (ie. parvo, distemper, etc), unlike shelter dogs.
I have cat allergies and its only to some cats - so there's a chance your wife may be okay with this dog. What I suggest is having your wife spend a good 10 minutes with the dog before purchasing it to see if anything happens. If not she may only have a reaction every once in a while where allergy medicine will do the trick. I'm allergic to one of my cats and I refuse to get rid of her, now and then I start heavily sneezing but then I take Benadryl and it makes me all better.
Do an online search of allergy friendly dogs. My mom has a chihuahua and he is very tempermental. He pees on everything when he doesnt get his way, and he is food aggressive. Not all chihuahuas are like that though. West Highland Terriers are really good dogs and they are known to not shed much if at all. They are small too.

ha, just an idea.

Teacup chihuahua's - good pet for kids? allergies?
My youngest (6) is starting to ask the "can I have a dog" question. But my wife has dog allergies, and I don't want a horse in the living room.
So the thinking was - less is more. If we get a dog, let's get a small one. So we let the 6 year old see...
some small dogs at a pet store, and he really like this one teacup chihaha. ..ok, we all liked it. the darn thing is really cute.
Thoughts?
