Switching from alto sax to mellophone

I have played the alto saxophone for 5 years now. Our band has several alto sax players. I've been considering switching to the mellophone/french horn. We have only one mellophone player for marching band/pep band. Then for concert band, we have 2 french horns. So does anyone here play ether of these instruments?? Would it be easy to learn after playing the sax for 5 years??

*Thanks!!

Hi lifeoftheparty20!!!

Unfortunately, I'm not very musically-inclined.

However, this discussion board thread talks about mellophones:

The main page, http:/www.8notes.com, might be a good place to just browse.

Good luck!

The french horn is the hardest of the brass instruments. Even professional horn players miss or crack notes sometimes. French horn mouthpiece rims are very narrow to help flexibility but being so thin makes endurance more difficult than trumpets or trombones.

If you really dig the sound of horn than you might enjoy playing it. Another issue is jazz ensemble. Frnech horn isn't in the standard jazz ensemble instrumentation. If you want to play in your school's jazz ensemble alto sax is a better choice. If you have time to keep your chops up for both instruments than you could do that.

There are more scholarships for horn players than for saxes which is nice.
