Keep your skin as moist and hydrated as possible. A thick and rich lotion that soaks into your skin and locks the moisture in is best. Drink lots of water too.

Noxema also works for an immediate cooling feeling.

Vinegar has been popular as a sunburn remedy for decades and it really seems to work. I remember a band trip to Florida when one of our drummers laid out for 8 hours on his first day there. He had about the worst sunburn I ever seen (in hindsight he probably should have been taken to the hospital). Chaparones took turns spritzing him with vinegar and in 2 days he was able to march with the band.

Tea, take a bath in tea it works great.
