How can we introduce this new puppy to my chihuahua?

Asked by victor501 about 1 year ago, 3 answers.

I just got a pomeranian puppy, 11 weeks old, female. She was introduced in a small meeting room to my 2 1/2 year old male/neutered chihuahua. My chi was afraid of the new puppy and wouldn't acknowledge her. It's basically been the same since we...

brought her home, though the chi will look sometimes and sniff towards her during short, 10 - 20 min introductions, the chi is on our lap and she is on the floor. She is sectioned off in a small part of the kitchen, and chi has access to the house. He has had no contact with other dogs since he was a puppy.

Is it worth trying putting them in a small space, such as a hallway so the chi cannot run away, for a few min? Or should we continue introducing them slowly for a while longer?

Any other pertanent advice would be great.

Thank you in advance

My advice would be to continue to give them SUPERVISED time together. Maybe just have everyone in the living room with the two dogs, but not forcing them to interact. Dont baby the chi and let him be on your lap the whole time. Show both dogs the same affection and eventually, they will get to know one another and the chi will get over his distaste for his new house mate. The more you let the two of the just roam the house together without sectioning them off all the time, the more time they will have to interact, just make sure you are always supervising them so as to avoid any potential outlashes by the chi. good luck!

I think that you should take the chihuahua to a dog park and socialize him some. He'll get more and more used to other dogs, and eventually he won't be as afraid. Maybe it would be good to leave them in a room on occasions so they get to know eachother better.
But don't make them be around eachother to long or else they might get sick of eachother fast. Try taking them to a park so the new puppy doesn't grow up to be that afraid of other dogs.

I had a dog like that one time...
was afraid of other dogs and all, well
I would agree with the other advice, DONT leave them in a room together
to long or they WILL get sick of each other just as we humans do when we are stuck together for a long long time, and I would agree...take both of the dogs out to the dog park every now and then...let them hang around with other dogs so that they will be use to being around other dogs and wont be scared.
