it depends on the time of day and where you are going. choose deep plum and wine reds with a blue undertone, light browns or beige with a pink undertone, or light shiny pinks with blue undertones.

I find red a hard lip color to wear depending on the natural skin color as most women tend to get it wrong but its just a matter of finding the right red shade.

If you have a warm complexion, such as a gold or peach undertones then look for the more peachy, rusty or straight on true red shades and stay away from the reds that have a blue undertone like the more mauvey, or rosy shades of red as they will wash you out.

If you have a cooler undertone (silver jewelry looks best against your skin) then look for the more mauvey, rosy shades of red although the warmer colors probably wouldn't look bad either. It's just the cooler red shades would pop more (get you more notice). Red also may make the teeth look whiter. The browner colors, even in the reds, not so much--If you have less than white teeth it may make it more noticeable.

I am a fan of the more neutral shades for just an every day natural look--Just let the natural lip color speak for itself and enhance one's God given natural beauty. I often get the most notice (including from guys) when I just enhance my natural lip color.

The more subtle pink shades also work. Huge fan of lip gloss for the every day look.

FYI. I am blonde (lighter in the summer to dark blonde in the winter), blue eyes with freckles who is fair skinned and looks best in gold or warm shades. If I am looking to attract or feeling rather fun/frisky then I go for the brighter corals. I don't like wearing the bright reds--Just not into red lip color that much, reminds me of my grandmother.
