Everyone talks about the "its safer then driving" concept but it is understandable to be skittish about flying. I have never been on a plane - but I'm also not a fan of not having the ability to move from a space and once you are in the air its kinda hard to get down until the plane lands.
So, my advice is don't worry about if you should be scared or not instead if you are scared find out why and see if you can do something about it.
I've been on a plane a couple of times. I don't know if you live in the US, but if you do, riding airplanes is quite safe. There are many saftey regulations and emergency procedures so that if something bad does happen it can be fixed. As of being afraid of heights, you don't even notice that you are up in the air. It doesn't even feel like you are moving.
