A tongue piercing, as with any other piercing, is something you should only get if you're really sure you want it. The pain you feel with any piercing, including tongue piercings, is dependent on each individual. People have different levels of tolerance for pain, so where as one person will say it hurts another will say they didn't feel much.
I'll tell you that when they pierce your tongue, they use what is called a clamp to cut off as much blood flow as possible. When I had my tongue pierced, there was an initial prick and a lot of pressure. Your eyes will probably water.
The rate of infection is dependent on a couple things. First, you have to go to a reliable sterile piercing parlor. Having a friend do it or someone you know or even doing it yourself is just asking to get an infection. Second, tongue piercings have a somewhat complicated after-care procedure and have a very uncomfortable period of swelling. If you do what thee piercer tells you to do and keep up with after-care, you shouldn't have a problem.
It is totally up to you as to whether or not you get a piercing, so you should make sure you want it and can take care of it.
My piercer totally numbed my tongue so I didn't feel anything, but it did swell up a lot after and is uncomfortable for a while. You must keep it clean and use a professional piercer. Good advice given from the person above me.
One downside to my piercing is that I've ruined quite a few of my teeth. You have to be 100%sure you want it done. Don't do it cause others have it done or because its a fashion statement.
