I've always been one to favor Rock, Metal, Alternative...etc... But that doesn't make rock better than rap. I'm a native Detroiter, so I've gotta support my 'homie' (ugh) Eminem, but My fav band of all time Is Fall Out Boy. So it really depends on your perspective.
(But if I had to choose, It would be rock, duh!)

REAL rap and hip hop are just as good as the best rock & roll, as originally it was all heavily rock & roll inspired, I.e. Run DMC, who basically invented hip hop. Basically any rap/hip hop since the early 90's has all sucked.
And it takes tremendous skill and knowledge to actually rap, as you have to pretty much be a master of the English language, have a large vocabulary, etc. That does not, obviously, apply to modern rap (or crap, as I call it).
But rock also now has it's faction of crapiocity, such as the crap that passes off as punk and heavy metal these days.
Rock its better because hip hop has turned down to bad sayings and just really overrated messages but rock its an expression of your emotions and it relates and its better

theyre both awesome but metal is way better than rap, its actual people playing instruments earning money this way, shredding the axe banging the double bass, and way more feeling, rap is dope and everything but at the end of the day its just a synth loop and a dude rapping on it.

Rock is sooo much better than rap. Rap has no meaning. 'Shawty got low, low, low...' What is that? 'A bay bay'? Seriously. I also believe that people who listen to rock are more educated and can speak well. Basically rock lyrics actually have a point. Rap is just degrading to women and ridiculous. Not saying that rap doesn't take talent or whatever cause I guess it does...but rock takes more. They can actually sing and/or play an instrument. Kinda better than talking.

hey elfranco...a lot of rappers is looking for their sound in rock..like lil wayne, lil jon etc...A lot of rappers are inspiring rocking...even RnB stars using rock sounds like guitar etc..ashanti-only u, I´ve been at Rihanna show and it was like rock show...In rap...you have to got good producer..some kind of beat and sometimes interesting voice..rap is more about frontin´ ...you talking about ferrari and all that bling-bling shine-a*s sh*t...but example GnR also got millions but rock is not about money but feelings...rap songs don´t make you cry! lol I would say rock. But this is such a stupid question. Rap or rock, which one is better? No one can answer that question. Its all based on your own preferance. If you like rock, then rock will obviously be better than rap, but if you like rap, rap will obviously be better than rock. As for rock being all about 'the devil' lol lets take '3 6 MAFIA' as an example. Just think about it for a second. 3 6 mafia. 3 6's? 666? hmm? devil? Last time I checked thats what 666 stood for. And the amount of profanity that is thrown into rap songs that you hear, you would think its the devil himself singing to us threw speakers. But you can also say the same about rock, so I would say they both are at a tie when it comes to the whole deal with the devil. I just think people need to explore genre's before they feel they can judge an entire genre after hearing maybe 3-4 bands? Personal opinion.

To whocarez, since when in order to make GOOD music does someone have to pick up an instrument and practice for 6-7 years until they are good enough to form a band? There are such thing's as 'sh!t' bands as there are 'sh!t' rap groups. And those sh!t bands could have practiced their asses off for 8 years but still could end up sounding like sh!t, when a rap artist wakes up one morning and decides to make a rap song and it becomes a multi million dollar hit. What would you call that? I would call that talent. Pure talent.

I havent listened to enough rap? I listen to a lot of rap dude, talib kweli, mobb deep, mos def, common, I also listen to mainstream sh!t because of the beats, I used to make hip hop beats and was trying to go into a career in that but its really hard to make it in music so I went into a more realistic thing, but yes dude I do listen to alooot of rap yo I listen to country aswell, I listen to jazz, I listen to a lot of things, you assume I dont listen to enough rap/hip hop because I like another style of music over it. I just dont find someone rappin on a beat about how hard it is in the hood interesting and I find it really unoriginal and uncreative. if you play all those instruments than you should know its harder to play an instrument than just putting a bunch of thoughts on a paper that rhyme, you should also know its really hard to sing and play an instrument at the same time, and you play drums right? I've met a lot of drummers that tell me you have to separate your mind because you have to do 1 thing with your arms and totally different things with your legs, I still doubt you play any of that because you make it seem like bands sit down for a minute and have a new song, wait YOU DID SAY THAT, and by the way I can compare them because rap music and rock music is ... music duhhh. they both have patterns and loops, metal has loops but they are played by instruments, they switch up tempos they change up melodies and drum patterns all in one song, rap is the same thing the difference is the loops is the same thru out the song, like a 2 or 4 bar loop and it repeats itself, the melodie barely switches up unless its the chorus remember dude I used to make hip hop beats they are pretty easy to make, but ill grant you that yes its my personal opinion that metal is better, but you cant deny that making metal is harder and takes more talent that rap dude seriously c'mon
Ok ok, Let me just Confirm for you that YES I do play all those instruments. And I never said that you could write a song in a matter of seconds. It takes time and dedication to make a song. I know that. BUT if I wanted to make an amazing 'metal' song YES it would take me a very long time becuase I want it to sound PERFECT. BUT if I wanted to make an amazing rap song it would take a very long time as well becuase again I would want it to sound perfect. Both genre's have an equal amount of talent. As you said before anyone can rap, Anyone can therefor play rock can they not? anmyone can pick up an instrument and take 2 years off their life then start a band? right? its open to anyone and everyone. Now if you say we can compare rock to rap then why not compare rock to classical? in that case classical completley destroy's rock. But see you cannot do that. ill agree with you man yeah it takes talent to rap, and yeah anyone can make rock music and anyone can rap, but like you said if someone wanted to make rock they would have to take 2 years and practice practice practice, someone that wanted to rap would aslo have to practice their vocab and how they flow but im guessing it would take a lot less than learning an instrument. to each his own right, we are never going to really know whats better just what someone thinks is better so at least to me I think metal/rock is better lol

it really depends..some rock is just screaming and wierd stuff and some rap is just disrespecting women and talking about drugs money and guns but the good thing about rap is that some rap songs are poetic, and they definitely tell stories. Some rock songs are also good because they're catchy and sometimes they have good lyrics also..I like both =] but rap you can really get into
