There are lots of portable digital music players out there. Pick one with the features you like.
As much as I've been an Apple basher over the years I have to admit that I really like my iPod nano. It is tiny (and the newest model is even thinner), it sounds good, and its controls are logical and easy to use.
The thing I don't like about iPods is that they are basically disposable. You use it for a year or two until the battery quits holding a charge then it cost a good portion of the price of a new one to replace the battery. Apple expects you to buy a new iPod every year or two. If Apple made the iPod such that it wasn't difficult to replace the battery I'd consider it almost perfect. Of course it is in their interest to force consumers to upgrade to the latest and greatest model every year or two.
I use a SanDisk 2GB MP3 player. I have it for when I ride my bike or cut the grass, Stuff like that. I have a external hard drive for storage so I don't use it for that and as far as social status goes I don't really have any friends so I don't have anyone to impress. I would like to get a bigger player, like the 8GB Nano just because I don't like to have to delete something every time I find new music.
