Dealing with racist friends?

Reading A Book Asked by hoserdomechild about 1 month ago, 7 answers.

How do I deal with having a friend who is racist while I am not? I could not disagree more with her ideology against black people. There is more to her than just that though. She really is kind, generous and funny once you get to know her and I don't want to give up on her as a 'lost cause' but it's extremely offensive, backwards, ignorant; what's the word I'm looking for...WRONG to be a racist!

I Don't Know What The Proper Attitude To Have About This Is,

Michael

perhaps tell her that you find it offensive
and ask her that if she is going to be racist, perhaps she could not be racist around you
if she says things like
if you are my freind you shouldnt mind, and such
then tell her that racism isnt something that people should be tolerant of

Usually people tend to learn things from their enviroments so she was probably rasied or taught to look down on people of color. I agree you should not have to tolerate listening to her making rasicts comments. My suggestion is to discuss this with her and tell her your opinion on people of color and hopefully she can pick up on it. If that does not work intruduce her to different races sometimes it's good to get the persective of another person and how they are portrayed. Anyways good lcuk

Racism is a natural instinct. It is from the instinct to fear that which is different and unknown. It is a survival instinct.

One has to be taught as they are growing up that racism is wrong and that it is the variety of different people in this world that help make it such a beautiful place.

She was never taught not to be racist, and, in fact, may have been raised by people who were themselves racist or in an otherwise racist environment.

The best you can do is to talk with her about racism and maybe supply her with knowledge about some of the creations and inventions contributed by other races to our way of life.

ITS NOT OKAY TO BE RACIST AND YOU SHOULD LET HER KNOW HAD YOU FEEL AND EXPLAIN HOW UNCOMFORTABLE IT MAKES YOU FEEL AND IF SHES A GOOD FRIEND SHE WILL WATCH HER SELF WHEN SHES AROUND YOU

Sorry but I disagree with ethmer. I see when it is taught not a natural instinct. In Alaska I don't think you can find a lot of interaction with black people. I went to a High School with a majority of blacks. I can tell you if you are raised to fear and hate then that is the only way racism is passed down. I have had small children smile and say 'hello' and parents not flinching and pulling them away without saying 'hello'. Therefore I know it is taught. Too many times I have experienced children being angels and parents being jerks. So it is taught. Your friend can't really be a best friend if you see differently. Maybe try finding some other open-minded friends.

your friend might also have had a bad childhood experience with them. maybe he/she was raped or robbed or abused by a black person and now will probably forver have that fear.I live in a very teeny tiny town where there are only about 4 or 5 black families and all we have to mainly go by is the sterotypes we see on tv since a lot of blacksare criminals who live in bad areas of town. (not that all are, I know that!)just try to help your friend understand about some of the great blacks, and if you cant, then just forget about it . its no use fighting for.

People please stop making excuses for her racist way, I all my life have been mistreated by white people, when I say mistreated I mean mistreated, I was in a group home and this white man put me in a full nelson, which by the way is illegal to do now to anybody but anyway's I couldn't breath and I was turning purple, I couldn't tell him because I couldn't breath less talking, my therapist saw my face and told the guy to let me go, this mothgerf*cker busted all my blood vessels on my face, but does that mean that I'm suppose to hate white people? (NOT)! so please stop making excuse for her, she knows right from wrong, she's just plain racist.
