puppy pads are good for when they are little..
we usually wait untill the are a few months old ususally 3 before we actually start potty training..
its usually best to get a puppy pottytrained during the summer due to excessive hours at home..
My little layla.. is just 3 months and we take her out side ever 3 hours. we walk her around a little bit she does her buissnesss we give her a treat ad then we bring her back inside.. she hasnt had an accident yet.
for the treats we broke them in peices like they do in the dog shows.. just enough that she new she was getting a treat. and after about a week on the constant ness we excell to 4 hours.. slowly but she gets it very easly.. and sometimes instead of the treat we give her encourge ment by petting and cooing.
She has done really well.
I wouldnt use puppy pads. The dog will get use to them and it makes it a very long proscess. Have paper towels and cleaner at the ready. It's going to have a few accidents. Take it outside offten. When it goes outside pat it on the head right after it finishes and say good. When it goes inside the house tap it on the nose, point to it, say 'whats that?' in an angry tone, and take it imediatly outside. Some people wil tell you thats mean, it just a puppy who dosent know better, but thats how they learn. I used this method when I got a new puppy a few weekes ago, and she only peed in the house 3 times and is now fully potty trained.
well I also have two kids. is it bad if maybe I wanted to put them in the stroller and the dog on a leash and walk them around the block? is there an age too early to take the dog for a walk? what about bathint he dog? any kind of general knowledge of dogs would help. I have had a dog before but never from point a where im training him on my own.
I trained my dog when she was 6 weeks old. I wouldn't give treats everytime they go outside. Treats are not very nutritional and she'll put on weight, but not the good growth weight. She'll also start to expect a treat everytime she goes outside, and once you feels she's trained and stop with the treats she might think she's doing something wrong and go in the house agian.
How old is the dog? I took my puppy on her first walk when she was 7 weeks, it was very short, but I increased her distance every time we walked. Now she's very strong and can make it around the neighborhood.
The number one ingredient to have a house trained dog is...VIGILANCE. You must make housetraining your "mission in life" for anywhere from 10 days to two weeks. Keep slip-on's by the back door, and a bathrobe or something quick to get into handy...because for this two weeks...housetraining will be your mission.
Your goal is...to beat the puppy to the punch...You'll learn his signals just by doing all that vigilance...like they'll start sniffing, and circling...you pick him up and take him out BEFORE he goes...Rules of thumb are also...For puppies, take him out immediately when he wakes up (do not let him follow you to the door...pick him up and carry out the door)...take out immediately after eating. During play a little puppy should be taken out every 20 minutes or so (aren't you glad they sleep so much??
)
Crate the pup whenEVER you cannot watch it (when you leave, or are ultra busy)...instinct is for them to not dirty their nest...so make sure the crate is only big enough to stand up, turn around, etc...A new puppy will need to get out once during the night...but that only lasts a week or so...You don't want the puppy having to go so bad he dirties his nest...you do NOT want to break that instictive barrier...once that's happened it's hard to undo.
When you get the pup outside...say 'pee pee' or whatever...then love them up BIG when they go...this will get them to go on command, and save you from having hang out and wait in the future. A pup can learn this by 3 months old.

yes those dogs will die if not adopted if they are at a kill shelter. they usually cost between $75-$150 but that is very inexpensive compared to what you usually pay. (I just got a pug puppy from a breeder for $450, and thats a small dog). and if you are a clean freak your dog WILL have accidents, so I advise you to get something already housebroken.
take the dog out every couple hours, the more frequent the better, and praise him/her while going potty outside and right after, lots of "good puppy" "such a good girl" and even treats or her favorite toy. If an accident occurs in the house, you only repremand if you catch it in the act, , it isnt a good idea for she doesnt know what you are upset about. once she gets more used to going outside, set schedule, as soon as you wake up, after each meal, before bed, and then if you can teach her to bark or let you know when she needs to go out at times between then.

Puppy potty training anyone?
Any one have any good advice on puppy potty training. I want a dog but I wanted one already potty trained. Well I saw this one my friends dog had puppies and I fell completely in love with it buts its not potty trained. And I myself am a clean freak...
and I would def. Have a stroke if this dog peed or pooped on my carpet or even any where in my house! So I was thinking puppy pads but I think that defeats the purpose of the dog knowing it needs to go outside to use the bathroom.
