Which kind of large dog won't fight with the others?

I have 3 small breed dogs (all males) we've moved to a new house with a extremely big garden. My dogs is like my children, but now I want a puppy (large breed) to protect the house. I dont want my dogs to fight with him or the other way around. What...

kind of breed will you suggest, and should it be male of female??

what are you other dogs and what are thay like you should get a female because they are most likly to fight less

Do these three get along ok?? If they do, then they have a pretty good "pack sense" already...a large breed dog, brought in as a pup, will pretty much be at the bottom of the "food chain" (for lack of a better term), for the rest of it's life in that pack...They will discipline it, and teach it doggie manners...

You didn't say HOW large a pup you're looking for, or how "guardie" of a breed...I've always had German Shepherds, and they do get along with other dogs if raised with them, and are very good about small dogs once they've reached maturity...I've also had a crossbred Rot/Pit/Lab who was wonderful with small dogs. The only thing you have to watch is rough play...puppies play rough...and small dogs aren't built to take a lot of punishment, even in play...Don't be afraid to step in and call a halt if things get too much for one of the smaller dogs...YOU are the alpha, when it gets right down to it.

Right now, I have a 18 lb, 15 year old Westie, who puts my 4 year old, 135 lb German Shep in his place when he gets too rambunctious, or looks crosswise at her dish...She started bossing him around at 8 weeks...and has never quit.

I would suggest a female, also...you're doing good right now with 3 males...I wouldn't want to push my luck...as "guardie" type dogs do tend to be dominant by nature...

hi there...I own 7 dogs, 5 of which are chih mixes (4 females and 1 male) and a shep mix and setter mix (both males).
small dogs are typically the bosses when mixed with larger dogs (though not always), and you already have a pack order going on there with the 3.
I would get a female dog, personally. and, I think it depends more on the dogs personality, not on any specific breed. I have seen german sheps that are true guarders and alphas, and ones that are real sissys...
you are in a perfect position to go to a shelter and look for a larger dog that gets along with yours. tell the shelter people what you are looking for and go shopping! if you get a puppy, the smaller dogs might be in charge for a while, but if you get a dominant high energy large dog, you may have probs when the dog get older. the larger dog may want to be leader of the pack. sometimes the smaller dogs submit, sometimes they don't. foster or rescue groups are usually very well informed people who can help you select the right dog for your situation.
as to the guarding part...most dogs will bark if there is an intruder. if you get a large dog, the size alone will usually do the job of scaring someone away. all of my dogs bark when someone comes to the door - the little ones taught them this!!!
