I'm just going to be honest with you, it probably will hurt. You know how bad it hurts when you bite your tongue? Well, imagine having a needle poked through it, and not just any needle, a THICK one. A friend of mine said that they hold your tongue still with these clamp type things, then poke a needle with a hole in the middle through, then put the tongue ring through that. Supposidly, they also have a little cup under your skin to catch the fallen flesh. Even if it doesn't hurt when you're actually getting it done, it will hurt like hell when it's healing and all you can have is liquid for like 2 weeks. This friend of mine doesn't even wear her tongue ring to school because she can barely talk, it sounds like she has a really ugly accent. Another girl I know had to take hers out because it was scraping against the inside of her mouth. A tongue ring definitely isn't something I would reccommend, but if you really, really want it and you're 100% SURE, than go for it. A little pain is a small price to pay. But remember, doubt meand don't, so it sounds like you still have some thinking to do, peace! I know all this isn't what you wanted to hear, but it's the truth.
Pain is generally part of the whole body modification scene; it is supposed to hurt, if it didn't than everyone would have a pierced tongue and you do want to be different right?. Tongue piercing is one of the more troublesome ones. Your mouth is not sterile so proper aftercare is a must. After the piercing you generally can't engage in deep kissing or oral sex for 4-6 weeks (one woman I know got her tongue pierced after breaking up with their boyfriend as a sign of independance).
Some piercing studios have Xylocaine anesthetic available. You should ask if they can give your tongue a shot of Xylocaine before piercing.
