A common misconception is that your body "needs" a period. When a woman is on a hormonal birth control she bleeds from a withdrawal of hormones - not because of a discarded and unfertilized egg. So while on a hormonal option a woman really has a "fake period"
When the pill was first introduced the 28 day cycle with a placebo week was put in place to make women psychologically accept the pill.
