Piercings and the pain you feel when you get them varies from person to person. Each individual has a different absolute threshold or tolerance for pain. Some say they feel nothing when they get it done, while others can make the statement that it was one of the worst things they've ever felt.
If you have a skilled piercer, they will be able to distract you or give you tips to keep your mind off of any pain you might experience. When I had my vertical labret done (a lip piercing that goes vertically through the bottom lip itself), my piercer told me to count to four and take a deep breath. When I took the breath he pushed the needle through and instead of a painful sensation I felt more pressure. The initial needle poking through the skin isn't what hurts; it's when they put the jewlery through that gets you. That's because in almost every case they use a starter jewlery piece that's a bigger gague than the needle. But even so, the pain is usually brief if any at all, lasting a few seconds.
Be sure you want a lip piercing and have done some research. Lip piercings are especially a hassle when it comes to changing the jewlery and the damage it causes inside the mouth. Lip piercings can heal EXTREMELY quickly and the hole can start to shrink as quick as 15 minutes from removing the jewlery. Also, most metal jewlery and flatbacks can cause small fractures in your teeth and scrape away the gum tissue.
