When I was 10 my dad got me a guitar for christmas! Even though I didn't want one he still thought I should try it. My dad said it wasn't in tune! So what the hell does that mean? I got my guitar 5 years ago and I still don't know what the hell that...

means!

The little knobs at the top of the guitar are there to adjust them to the right frequencies (aka, 'tune'). To tune a guitar, you can either get a simple guitar tuner, a pitch pipe, or an internet tuner, and just adjust the tension on the strings until you get the same sounds for each string.

Starting withe the skinny string, tune it to E (using one of the above) , then tune the string next to it to B, then G D A and E for the other strings.

You can also self tune a guitar, but it's too hard to explain in words. Just google 'self tuning a guitar'.

when a guitar is in tune it will sound good when it is played...if its not in tune it will sound like crap, there are different ways to tune it for differen't sounds. but yah if it isn't tuned properly learning will be impossible because it wont sound right.
