Absolutely...if it already has a name, no biggie...it will learn it's new name...just like a rescue dog who's name is unknown...a new one is given, and it only takes a couple of days to start getting a response.

Treats help the process.

In that case, it should be fine. Unless it already knows it's name... then that could get confusing for it. It depends on how attactched it is to the name I guess.

it depends on things like the dogs age and that
if hes an old dog, hes probably very used to his name, so wont recognise the new one...
or it will take a LOT of time and rewards for when he comes when you call him by his new name
if hes a younger dog he'll be a bit easier to re-name
you just need to reward them with treats when they recognise the new name
but older dogs are harder...there used to that word by now
but its up to you, just make sure youve got the patience to teach it its new name!

Yes you can! But give the dog a name with two syllables. Dogs dont really understand words they hear tones and syllables. A dog who hears one syllable may get it confused with words like sit or stay or speak but a dog with two won't have such a problem and it will be easier to re-train/train him/her. Also three syllables tends to be to hard for a dog but is not impossible just extra training... though it is hard to teach and ole dog new tricks!

I did the same thing, I adopted a dog that already had a name...my suggestion would be to make the new name sort of sound like its old name...my went from jester to dodger...not a drastic change in sound really.

I changed my cat's name, but she was young at the time...
However most anything can be learnt with the right reinforcement...

Well you can try, but it'll probably get confused & just come to you anyways.

Ok now to play the devil's advocate the old timers always said it was bad luck to change a dogs name. But I don't think that is true there is always a grain of reason to what the old times say.

ya its fine... I changed my cats name from scout to ashley and she was fine... cats are much more difficult about change than dogs so I mean really, if it could work with a cat it could work with a dog. I am changing my pug puppy's name from Jane to Trixie she is 6 weeks old now and will be 9 weeks old when I actually get her so I mean she will have known her name for awhile to and she should be fine... if it doesnt work well ill let you know!
