There is a difference between being in a depressed mood - unhappy/moody/sad (which everyone goes through at certain periods) and actual clinical depression (which is a serious mental disorder...)
The former is normal, the latter is not so normal...

Dear jaes,
No, it is not normal for depression. If you are feeling sad, unhappy, without hope etc. for more then a few months straight then you need to seek out a doctor. There are many reason for depression and some are medical reasons. Depression is much different then sadness from a tragic event, it is different from the odd mood swings. Depression will last a long time with no relief. So if anyone stays sad, unhappy or hopeless for more then a few months there definitely is a problem that needs to be addressed by a professional.
Sue...good luck
