How to add video downloads onto my ipod touch?

I have video files that I downloaded from bearshare on my computer and when I try and drop the file in itunes movie section it wont show up and I tried resting itunes and my ipod touch and I know it should be able to play videos it plays all my music...

files just not the video ones plus I tried adding the files to itunes libary and it would not work I have itunes 7.6 if there is a different one I should use tell me and give link plus all my music files work fine and show up on my ipod
so I asked a similar qeustion before and people just gave me converters that convetered dvd files to avi. or some crap if I do need a converter please explain what I have to do and why I need it and how to use it has to be free not a trail version because doesn't DO NOT work I know I have space because its a 8g and I only used 985mb for songs so far
