If you hear static it is probably because you have the volume up so high that you are getting distortion. I like my music pretty loud as well but I usually keep the volume level below where I get distortion.
Some headphones are more efficient than others. You could be using headphones that simply require more power than your iPod can produce. With reasonably efficient headphones I can get the volume on my iPod loud enough to endanger my hearing without noticeable distortion.

Ipod loudness??
OMG, im listining to my ipod, and it can get REALLY loud, btw, im listinging to slipknot, so obvously it loud, but is there a problem with my headphones? because as im listining to it on full blast, I hear a lot of static...should I just change my EQ, or...
buy new hps?
