my ipod wont show up ask sync on iTunes, how do I get it to?
+ yes its plugged in

Are you connecting using IEEE 1394 (ie Firewire) or USB? Is it on a PC or a Mac?

USB + PC

Try borrowing someone else's wire then try again! if it works then its the wire! you will have to go buy a new one!

Right, I'm not an expert on iPods, but I'll give you a few options to try and see how it goes.

Firstly - Ensure that the iPod is plugged into the cable, but the cable is not plugged into the USB. Now switch on the iPod and then plug it back into the USB port. Dit is work? yes/no...

Secondly - If the it didn't work, do the same process, but use a different USB port.

Thirdly - Still no luck, while the iPod is connected, uninstall the iPod software (if there is any), then then remove the iPod, reboot the computer and leave it to boot into Windows. Once in Windows, follow the first step listed and see if that works.

If it still isn't working, I'd do step 3, but before rebooting the system, completely remove iTunes also, then reboot. Once booted into Windows, download and install the newest version of iTunes (please note, the iPod should still be disconnected) and reboot. After this reboot, let the system complete the boot into Windows and follow step 1.
