Mine lasted about a year and a half. I thought I'd have to get a new iPod but I looked around and found ipodjuice.com. Got an awesome new battery from them and their kit made changing it so easy. Much cheaper than a battery change from apple too

I've had mine for two years and it's working fine. But I did see at Fry's Electronics a kit designed to let you open and replace the battery of you iPod. I think it was about 50 bucks (which makes more sense to me than buying a whole new iPod)

How long do ipod batteries last?
how long have you had your ipod with the battery still lasting
