It takes a LOT of practice. There's no quick fix. My guess is you need about 500 hours of practice before your playing will start to sound sort of good (1.5 hour/day for 1 year) on simple pieces, about 1000 hours before you'll be playing some of the simpler pop music respectably, and closer to 5000 hours of practice to be of sufficient quality to play local gigs.
The big name players have 50,000+ hours invested in play time.
Don't do what I do and play randomly. Play consistently even if you aren't playing a song, just work on keeping your callouses. Try making your own stuff up, it can be less frustrating when you are doing your own stuff because your not trying to copy something else and you can memorize it easily. Make friend with people who play to inspire you.

I have books but they are too restricting!
