I have the same problem... I wouldnt recomment what I did. He came over for dinner and we ended up having far too much to drink and I blurted everything out to him then bawled my eyes out. So far it hasnt worked out the way I want it to (havent completely ruled it out though) but on a positive note, we didnt end up feeling awkward around each other, I think because we both really value our friendship and wouldnt let something like that ruin it.
I think the best thing when you tell him is to let him know that no matter what, your friendship is important and if he doesnt feel the same way you can both move on and continue with the relationship you already have. I hope he feels the same way, I know what its like! Good luck

I love my best friend
How do I tell my best friend that I like him more than a friend?
