Hurt puppy

Asked by fau about 1 month ago, 10 answers.

My friend had her chihuahua spaied this morning around eight and the vet did not keep her over night which I thought was a little unual. They had given her a shot this morning, but by now it has worn off. She refuses to move, tries to bite my friend, and...

doesn't even want to go to the bathroom. Anyone know anything that may relieve the pain at all?

Do not give her any pain medication.Certain types of human drugs will kill your dog. Spaying and nutering is now an outpatient procedure which does not usually involve a hospital stay. The vet should have perscribed a pain pill and given doses. If not, call the vet, or the nearest emergency hospital.. THe dog may not be moving becuse of the sedation, and possibly biting due to the pain and the sedation effects. With small dogs such as a Chihuahua, special care must be provided. THey are a small breed and can have more severe reactions. I highly suggest taking the dog to an emergency clinic if you are worried.

NO aspirin...aspirin thins the blood, and this dog just came out of surgery, you don't want to take any chances of her starting to bleed internally...Some dogs have trouble getting over the antithesia, and this pupper might still be under it's effects, even tho she seems alert...but could explain part of the snapping. Also, she hurts, which would also explain part of the snappy behavior.

I'd put her on a leash, and let her walk out the door, to go potty...not try to pick her up...Actually, moving around a little bit, will loosen her up a little, and she'll be in less pain.

If your friend thinks she's in more pain than she should be, the emergency clinic...(or call the vet who let her go without pain pills)...and get her a couple. She should be fine in a day or so.

Maybe lab would've been the key word there, wouldn't it >>

This is completely normal. I had a dog spayed on the back of an 18 wheeler when a free vet clinic came into my town once. I got her back that day, and all the vets we brought her to since then said they did an amazing job, she barely even scarred. The dog is going to be irritable for a couple of days, she doesnt understand what is going on.
Do not worry about pain meds, unless the vet prescribed them for you.

I had a cat spade, she didnt stay overnight and they never gave her pain medications... I dont think it's that unusual (although cats seem to heal faster, she was jumping on ledges, before I could stop her, a couple of hours after I brought her home)

No "lab" is not the key word. Aspirin is dangerous to give postop. Aspirin stops platelets from forming and platelets are the components of the blood that stop bleeding.
Really, people should be careful giving medical advice unless they are trained or have years of experience. The incorrect advice can lead to death.

You need to call the vet. don't give anything because anything yu can give is based on mg's and the dog weight. I work at hospital and we do not let dog leave unless owner refuses to let them spend the night and we give meds for pain management unless owner refusses it. I suggest she find a new vet unless she choose to take dog home, and save money on the surgery it self by declining all other PAS. but get her help she is in pain, My chi just had a c-section and she was in pain and tried to bite the doctor, not many meds could be given because of nursing baby. good luck
