Normally all you need to do is make a simple syrup. Not knowing what size of feeder you have I've left this recipe open ended. Make as much or as little as you need. If you make more, keep a squeeze bottle full in the fridge and use it to sweeten your ice tea or other drinks.

INGREDIENTS:

* 2 parts sugar
* 1 part water

PREPARATION:

1. Bring the water to a boil.
2. Dissolve the sugar into the boiling water.
3. Once the sugar is dissolved completely, remove the pan from the heat.
4. Allow to cool completely and bottle.

Very important, do not add any food color to this syrup. Studies have shown that it's not good for the birds. Leave it clear.

I've always used 1/4 cup of sugar to one cup of water or 4 parts water to one part sugar.
However I do add just a touch more sugar for good measure, a touch meaning probably another tablespoon. They love it and they will come back every year to the same place.

Dear sarah6,
There is no need to boil the water or to add food colouring. Just completely dissolve 1/4 cup of suger to 1 cup of water by stirring. Humming birds are very fussy about what they drink and will not go to a feeder that is dirty or not well taken care of. If the food has not been all taken up in a few days; clean feeder and refill.
Sue...good luck
